TODAYS SUCCESS

  Today the Board has secured a discharge for seven (7) indigent inmates who have been remanded from 2 to 6 years for crimes ranging from murder, larceny, wounding with intent, unlawful carnal knowledge amongst others. The Executive Director, expresses joy over their release more so through the effort of the office. She however cautioned them that when going back to their various communities, they should be law abiding and be respectful to others.

National Youth Coalitions and Union of Youths

  The Executive Director Legal Aid Board, Claire Carlton Hanciles told them about the work of the Board and stressed its importance in the lives of youths. Mrs Carlton Hanciles informed them that the Truth and Reconciliation Report recommended that Legal Aid should be made available to the people of Sierra Leone, and a pilot stage was started in 2008. In 2012, the Legal Aid Act was passed in Parliament. She called on the youth to partner with the Board, in order to be able to afford the people in their different communities Legal Aid in time of conflict with the Law. In her power point presentation, the Legal Aid Boss gave the youths a comprehensive update of the work of the Board, which revealed that a 75% of the clients of the Board and in the jails are youths.  She advised the youths to keep out of trouble to avoid falling foul of the Law. Its 3:30 in the afternoon on Thursday 26 th May at the Legal Aid Board. Three Juveniles have been discharged from the Juvenile Court. 1.        Abdul Turay, 14 years old, was charged with, Carrying Offensive Weapons Without Lawful Authority and Loitering with Intent. He spent 7 days at the Police station and 6 days at the Remand Home. He was sentenced with an alternative fine of Le100 000. The fine was paid and they freed. 2.        Mohamed Conteh, 16 years old, was charged with, Carrying Offensive Weapons Without Lawful Authority and Loitering with Intent. He spent 7 days at the Police station and 6 days at the Remand Home. He was sentenced with an alternative fine of Le100 000. The fine was paid and they freed. 3.        Abdul Karim Marah, 14 years old, was charged with House Breaking and Larceny. He spent 1 month and 2 weeks at the Police station and 6 days at the Remand Home. He was discharged for want of evidence. They were represented by Joel Tejan Deen T

Legal Aid Board

36 cases are going to court today Thursday 26th May 2016; 27 cases to the High Court, 7 to the Magistrate courts and 2 to the Juvenile court. The Legal Aid Lawyers will be representing 69 indigents in the different courts; 33 indigents in the High Court, 33 in the Magistrate Courts, and three indigents in the Juvenile Courts.   These indigents will be represented according to the mandate of the Legal Aid Board. REPUBLIC OF SIERRA LEONE ARMED FORCES BENEFIT FROM LEGAL EDUCATION.

  Officers and men of Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces have lauded Sierra Leone Legal Aid Board for affording them access to justice. The Executive Director, Legal Aid Board, Fatmata Claire Carlton-Hanciles, noted that the  Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces has an integral role to play in the justice sector, and that they should work in partnership with the Legal Aid Board, to be able to realize their goals. Mrs. Carlton-Hanciles noted that the Legal Aid Board was created by government to give both Service Personnel and the Civil Populace, access to justice. She informed the Officers that the Board is in the process of creating Citizens Advisory Bureaus in the every Ward in the country. The Bureaus, she said, will look into trivial matters that would have otherwise gone to court, thereby, decongesting the courts. REPUBLIC OF SIERRA LEONE ARMED FORCES HAS BENEFITED FROM A LEGAL EDUCATION AND OUTREACH SENSITIZATION BY LEGAL AID BOARD. Officers and Men of RSLAF lauded the intervention of LAB for bringing access to Justice into the military. The Executive Director of Legal Aid Board Mrs. Fatmata Claire Carlton-Hanciles noted that the RSLAF has an integral role they play in the justice sector and that they should work in partnership to realize their goals. She noted that both Service Personnel and the Civil Populace should be able to access justice in whatever circumstances. Brig.Gen.R.T.Alieu said RSLAF is very  delighted to work with the board as some of their personnel have been denied justice in the past, which resulted to the incarceration of some key junior officers that has surmounted to the failure of these personnel to execute key duties. Both RSLAF and LAB are determined to put an end to the anomalies that have threaten the lives and families of serving soldiers.

SUMMARY OF COURT ACTIVITIES FOR THE WEEK ENDING FRIDAY 20TH MAY, 2016 There were a total of 192 cases in the different courts' 63 cases in the High Court, 31 in the Magistrate courts and 10 in the Juvenile court. Out of all the indigents 179 were male adults and 3 were female adults, 9 were male juveniles and 1 female juvenile. II male adults and 1 male juvenile were discharged. The numbers of discharged indigents according to profession were as followers: 3 Drivers, 1 Vehicle Apprentice, 3 Motor Mechanics, 3 Military Service Men, 1 Acting Manager and 1 pupil. The number of discharged people according to the crime from which they were discharged was as follows: 1 sexual penetration, 2 Robbery with Aggravation 4 Wounding with Intent, 3 Unlawful Canal Knowledge, 1 hop Breaking and Larceny and 1 Larceny in a Dwelling House. The indigents were discharged as a result of applications made for discharge, for want of prosecution, by Legal Aid Board Lawyers.

The Executive Director, has presented the eagerly awaited Report on the Central Lorry Park, otherwise known as ‘Clay Factory’.

The Executive Director, Legal Aid Board Sierra Leone, Fatmata Claire Carlton-Hanciles has presented the eagerly awaited Report on the outcome of Legal Aid Board’s intervention into and the investigation of the long running conflict at the Freetown Central Lorry Park, otherwise known as ‘Clay Factory’. Three recommendations made in the report were that, 1. Every claimant will hold on their plots as a freehold property, 2. The plot claimants will only pay the sum Two Million Leones (Le2m), which is quite a minimal sum for a plot of land for commercial purposes in the Western Area, and 3. That the complex will be used for the purposes of a lorry park and a market for trading and for a weekly trade fair, commonly called ‘Luma’. The complex will become the hub for business in Sierra Leone. The president thanked the team for their contribution in resolving the issue and proposed another working visit to Clay Factory together with line ministries to ensure all stakeholders are fully involved. He disclosed that government was reaching out to the informal sector to enhance the transformation of the facility, and cited the Makola Market in Ghana as an example. President Koroma observed that no country can grow without the full involvement of the private sector. Introduction to the Sierra Leone Legal Aid Board

Sierra Leone Legal Aid Board  Introduction Access to a well-funded legal aid scheme is key to the attainment of justice for the poor, marginalized and disadvantaged, though in some circumstances other categories of highly placed persons or professional may require it. Globally many countries around the world have invested in programs and interventions on providing free legal aid services to its citizens. The UN member states have thus accepted that legal aid schemes must not only be optional but should be a key component of national legal justice systems. The UN Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice in Vienna adopted a resolution on "access to legal aid in criminal justice systems". The resolution adopts a set of "Principles and Guidelines" designed to ensure that access to legal information, advice and assistance is available to all through the provision of legal aid—thus realizing rights for the poor and marginalized and entrenching one
