SUMMARY OF COURT ACTIVITIES FOR THE WEEK ENDING SATURDAY 25 th June, 2016. There were a total of 191 cases in the different courts; 142 cases in the High Court, 25 in the Magistrate courts and 24 in the Juvenile court.   STATISTICS FOR 20 TH -25 TH JUNE, 2016 C OUR T ACTIVITIES Out of all the indigents, 282 were male adults and 8 were female adult, 10 were male juveniles and 17 female juvenile. 7 male adults were discharged; 1 male adult was put on bail. 6 male adults were sentenced to various correctional terms. The numbers of discharged indigents according to profession were as followers; 3 secondary pupils, 2 drivers and 2 tertiary students. The number of discharged people according to the crime from which they were discharged was as follows: 3 for House Breaking and Larceny, 1 for Abuse of a Young Girl, 3 for Robbery with Aggravation. The indigents were discharged as a result of applications made for discharge for want of prosecution, by Legal Aid Board

LEGAL AID BOARD ON ASSISTANCE TO REPEAT OFFENDERS

  A midu Bangura, 3'5 will go down in history as the first beneficiary of the Sierra Leone Legal Aid Scheme to re-offender. Amidu is one of 355 persons, most remand cases, to have benefited from the Scheme since it commenced operations in May 2015. Amidu was a resident of Waterloo in the Western Rural District prior to falling foul of the law. He was arrested and detained at the Kissy Mess Mess Police Station on. 16 June 2006 as part of an investigation into a complaint that was lodged against him. He spent six days in police cell and was then charged with 'wounding Alimamy Kargbo with intent to do him grievous bodily harm.' He was denied bail at the Magistrate Court and was remanded at the Pademba Road Correctional Center. He made his first appearance at the High Court on 3 November 2006 and was again denied bail. SUMMARY OF COURT ACTIVITIES FOR THE W EEK ENDING SATURDAY 11TH JUNE, 2016 There were a total of 96 cases in the different courts; 62 cases in the High Court, 27 in the Magistrate courts and 7 in the Juvenile court. Out of all the indigents, there were 125 male adults and 3 female adults, while 4 were male juveniles and 3 were female juveniles. 5 male adults were discharged and 3 male adults were sentenced. The number of indigents according to professions were as followers; 3 traders, 1 driver and 1 builder. The number of people according to the crimes for which tbey discharged was as follows: 1 for Robbery with aggravation, 1 for Wounding with intent, 1 for Assault -Grievous Bodily Harm, 1 for Larceny and 1 for Manslaughter. DISCHARGE FOR TODAY

Today LAB has secured the discharge of two inmates who were remanded at the Pademba Road Correctional Center for one year seven months. they were charged for Robbery.

Dr Valdimir D. Momcilovich Esq has on behalf of the European Union, paid a fact finding visit to the Legal Aid Board at their offices, first floor, Guma Building, Lamina Sankoh Street in Freetown. Dr Valdimir Momcilivich said that Brussels wanted to know what the situation was at the Legal Aid Board and on Pro bono matters in Sierra Leone; what the Legal Aid Board was doing, their needs and challenges, strategies to improve and access to support. The Legal Programme Manager, Mr. Ivan Sesay, informed The European Union Envoy that as a result of the war, a Truth and Reconciliation Commission was formed. It was during the deliberations that it was revealed that the war came about as a result of injustice perpetrated by the then judicial system; the lacked access to justice because the people were too poor to afford legal representation. The Legal Aid Board Sierra Leone has on Thursday 9th June, held a Consultative meeting with the Fourty Nine, Western Urban and twenty Western Rural Counsilors, the sixteen Tribal Heads in the Western Area, Civil Society and the Fourth Estate. The meeting was geared towards the Establishment of Community Citizen’s Advisory Bureau in all Wards in the Country.   Francis A. Gabbidon Esq, a  Scholar and a Gentleman, who was Chairman for this much needed, long awaited Consultative meeting, described the day as historic, and called the Legal Aid Board, a game-changer in the history and legality of Sierra Leone. This gentleman and Scholar pointed out that the lack of justice and fairness contributed to the war in Sierra Leone as was evident at the TRC, and that it was first in the history of the country that Citizen’s Advisory Bureaus are been created, which will serve as a deterrent to future conflicts.
