Summary of Court Activities for the Week Ending Saturday 6^th August 2016

There were a total of 165 cases in the different courts; 125 cases in the High Court, 31 in the Magistrate courts and 9 in the Juvenile court.

Out of a total of 235 indigents, 218 were male adults and 8 were female adults, 7 were male Juveniles and 5were female juveniles.

Only 1 male adult was discharged as a result of sentenced and time served and only 1 male adult was put on bail.

No cases were committed to the High Court there were no sentences. There were two closed files as a result of revelations that they had private representations, which disqualified them as indigents.

The discharged indigents according to professions was a trader.

The discharged person was charged with Wounding with Intent.

In this matters, the accused person had spent more than time to be served. Consequently, after sentencing, the accused person was discharged pursuant to the relevant sections of the Constitution and the Criminal Procedure Act of 1965.

The Executive Director, Legal Aid Board Sierra Leone, Mrs. Fatmata Claire Carlton-Hanciles, has held a very meaningful meeting with the Council of Tribal Heads in Sierra Leone. She noted that justice was not prevalent at the lower class in Sierra Leone and pointed out that most of the witnesses do not appear in the courts when cases are called. That, she said, has kept a lot of innocent people in jails without trial, thereby destroying their lives. The meeting witnessed the processing of seven youths released from different courts in Freetown. Six youths who were held for different crimes, ranging from wounding to larceny, were released at the High Court by Justice Sam Margai. Five were released on an application for a discharge for want of prosecution by Legal Aid Lawyers, Cecelia Tucker and Contract Lawyer who applied for the sixth one. LAB, Disability Commission to launch campaign on Disability Rights

LAB, Disability Commission to launch campaign on Disability Rights The Legal Aid Board and the National Commission for Persons with Disability are collaborating on rights issues pertaining to disabled persons. The target group includes the Blind, Wheelchair Users, Deaf, Amputees, War Wounded and Albinos. The disabled persons qualify for legal aid without any precondition because they are vulnerable. According to the National Outreach Officer for the Legal Aid Board, Mr. Ibrahim Kamara the Board has had two meetings with the Disability Commission this month. The two agreed to launch a campaign in the coming weeks. ‘The campaign will draw attention to serious rights issues affecting the Disabled persons,’ he said.
